Intro

I was born in 1989 in Pavlograd, a city 80 kilometres from Dnipro. I started first grade in Dnipro, changed schools three times, and completed nine grades. Then I entered a technical college. I had disliked studying since third grade; I paid my way through both technical college and university with the money I earned, so I consider my qualifications unearned. I would rather tell you what I did to earn the money for those bribes.

2001 - My first job, at twelve, was as a construction labourer. There is not much to tell: I worked because I enjoyed it, not because my family needed the money.

2002 - My second job, at thirteen, was my first IT job, and it was remote from the start. The adult industry seemed ideal for a teenager: circle-jerk link networks, tube sites, and traffic. I earned my first meaningful money there and put skills I had previously considered mere entertainment to practical use.

2003 - That experience introduced me to older colleagues, who introduced me to freelancing. I wrote software, mainly for the web, for overseas clients and became proficient with Linux/Perl/JS/HTML+CSS.

2004 - I entered the web development department at STEP Academy and completed the course externally. There were a few interesting teachers. This brought some structure to the chaos of my knowledge, although, unfortunately, it did not greatly improve my overall level. Naturally, I kept freelancing.

2005 - I registered a sole proprietorship, bagow.com, in a relative's name and began developing websites, just as Ukraine's website boom was taking off. I made simple sites for small businesses, charging between $100 and $500. Studying at STEP brought an unexpected benefit: I knew many people with skills similar to mine, so I could take on more orders than I could complete alone. At the peak, I sometimes received one or two orders a day. To me, that was astronomical money.

2007 - Bagow.com grew and shifted towards more complex software solutions with an emphasis on science and engineering, subjects that had always fascinated me despite my dislike of educational institutions. Our team was small but included some very interesting people whom I had brought together entirely by chance. Our solutions at the time included:
